Prince Siddhartha at Birth

Gilt bronze

Prince Siddhartha at Birth

CHINA; Qing dynasty

This figurine depicts the newly born Prince Siddhartha as he takes his first seven steps in Lumbini Garden. Pointing with his left hand to the sky and his right hand at the ground, he announced his future destiny with the words, “I am supreme in both Heaven and Earth.” The child wears a traditional Chinese bellyband and stands on a double lotus pedestal, signifying the lotus flowers that blossomed under his feet as he walked. Statues in this mudra are identified with the Buddha Washing Ceremony when his birth is celebrated.
