Janggoksa Temple: Amitabha Buddha Assembly

This painting features Amitabha Buddha surrounded by the Eight Great Bodhisattvas, six monks, Brahma, Sakra, Brahma, Buddhas from other lands, and the Four Heavenly Kings. Besides the damaged section that obscures the image of Dhrtarastra Heavenly King of the East, the painting is well-preserved.
Amitabha sits in full lotus position on a Sumeru throne. Five rays of transparent white light emanate from behind the head and from a jewel at the top of the tall usnisa. The Buddha’s robe is secured with a white sash that hangs down the Sumeru throne, characteristic of Buddhist paintings from the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910). Colorful lines are painted within the petal-shaped nimbus. The Eight Great Bodhisattvas are slightly larger than the other accompanying figures, and each has a pale green nimbus.
