Tongdosa Temple: Brick with Seated Buddhas

SOUTH KOREA, South Gyeongsang, Yangsan; Unified Silla dynasty

This brick has five Buddha images on its stretcher face. The Buddhas are seated with their legs crossed on a lotus throne. However, their facial features are indistinguishable. They wear robes and their hands are in the dhyana (meditation) mudra. The nimbuses, with clouds on both sides, and the mandorlas are clearly visible. Between the Buddhas, there are three-story pagodas consisting of a base, body, and spire. At the corners of the eaves are wind chimes, a popular architectural feature during the late 7th century in South Korea.
