Head of Monk’s Staff

Gilt bronze

Head of Monk’s Staff

KOREA; Goryeo dynasty

Originally attached to a pole, the center of this monk’s staff features a depiction of a Bodhisattva standing on a lotus pedestal forming the abhaya (fearlessness) and varada (wish-granting) mudras, wearing a headdress and a robe that covers both shoulders. A mandorla behind the figure leads up to a small pagoda at the top, and the outside portion forms the shape of a trefoil. There is a lotus bud at the end of the stem, connecting the top of the pedestal to the middle of the trefoil.
