Hannyaji Temple Thirteen-Tier Pagoda Engravings

JAPAN, Nara; Kamakura period

The figures are carved on the first tier of the 13-tier pagoda at Hannyaji Temple. The pagoda is 14.2 m high, with the first tier consisting of four squared slabs that are identical in size. Incised on the slabs are representations of Sakyamuni, Amitabha, Maitreya, and the Medicine Buddha. Amitabha Buddha is found on the west side of the pagoda. The figure is presented in simple outline that has been precisely cut into the stone. The Buddha sits cross-legged on a lotus throne with the right hand raised in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra. The structure was listed as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
