Wood
This wooden box was used to hold sutras. It is 47.2 cm long, 25.8 cm wide, and 24.8 cm high, the entire box is lacquered and inlaid with a floral pattern in copper and mother-of-pearl. The hinged lid has beveled edges. There is a rudimentary lock and there are handles at the sides. At the corners of the lid, there are two Chinese characters which read “baho” in Korean, meaning “treasure within.” This sophisticated work of art is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
