This image is found in the southeast corner of the ceiling. The cartouche identifies the figure as Candraprabha Buddha and is counterpart to Suryaprabha Buddha in the northeast corner. Suryaprabha and Candraprabha Bodhisattvas are attendants to the Medicine Buddha. When these two Bodhisattvas attain Buddhahood, they are known as Suryaprabha Buddha and Candraprabha Buddha.
This image of Candraprabha Buddha holds a staff topped by a crescent moon in one hand, while the other hand rests upon the knee. The figure is seated upon five white birds and enclosed within a full moon. Flame patterns frame the Buddha’s round aureole. The top half of the full moon radiates multi-colored light, representing the light that illuminates the world.
