Yulin Cave 3: Manjusri Bodhisattva and Attendants - Sakra

Yulin Cave 3: Manjusri Bodhisattva and Attendants - Sakra

CHINA, Gansu, Guazhou; Western Xia period

This image is found within the illustration of Manjusri Bodhisattva and Attendants, to the left of Manjusri. Sakra is the ruler of Trayastrimsa Heaven and is depicted here with a nimbus. He wears a tall headdress with long ribbons, which trail behind. He has flowing robes with large sleeves and loose, straight folds. Ornaments further embellish the regal attire, which reflects clothing characteristic of the imperial court of China at the time. A thin wash of color has been applied over the clothing, and the smooth lines convey elegance. Sakra holds a plate in both hands filled with objects such as coral, rhinoceros horn, coins, and a wish-fulfilling jewel.
