Obongri: Seated Buddha

Obongri: Seated Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, North Gyeongsang, Gimcheon; Unified Silla dynasty

An inscription on the base of the stone pagoda on the site of the former Galhang Temple records that it was erected when the temple was rebuilt in 757. It is inferred that this statue, which stands on the site, dates from the same time. The sculpture was listed as Treasure No. 245 in 1963 despite its damaged state.
The Buddha sits cross-legged, wearing a monastic robe that leaves the right shoulder bare in a manner popular in 8th century sculptures. The broken hand was probably in bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. The holes at the back are where the mandorla was formerly attached.
