Color on linen
This painting is located on the back wall of the Great Hero Hall of Heungguksa Temple. In 1974, it was listed as Treasure No. 578. Sakyamuni Buddha is in the center, seated in full lotus position with an elaborate nimbus and aureole. The Buddha has a tall usnisa and curled hair. The small facial features and the broad shoulders are typical of Korean Buddhist artworks. Bodhisattvas, disciples, and the Four Heavenly Kings surround the Buddha. Unique beaded clouds are painted around the heads of the figures and at the top of the picture. The teal nimbuses contrast with the pale red used to color most of the painting. The robes and armor of the figures are decorated with intricate patterns.
