Kanheri Cave 3: Standing Buddha

INDIA, Maharashtra, Mumbai

Located within a niche on the left side of the portico, this large Buddha has bare feet and stands with the right leg slightly bent. The figure appears strong with a gentle countenance. The Buddha’s right hand forms the varada (wish-granting) mudra, while the left hand is raised to the shoulder. The hem of his monastic robe descends the length of the body in curving folds. The garment displays the thin and fitted characteristics of the Gupta style. The columns on each side of the niche are engraved with vertical lines, the niche has an arched ceiling, and the lintel is covered with figures carved in relief.
