Kanheri Cave 41: Buddha Triad - Eleven-Headed Avalokitesvara (detail)

Kanheri Cave 41: Buddha Triad

INDIA, Maharashtra, Mumbai

The Buddha is seated in full lotus position within a niche and is flanked by standing Bodhisattvas. He has curly hair, a usnisa, broad shoulders, and a narrow waist, with both hands resting on the knees. The Buddha’s face, hands, and lower limbs are damaged. On each side, the Bodhisattvas have bare upper bodies and wear chest ornaments and stoles. The Bodhisattva on the right wears a headdress and leans slightly to one side. An Eleven-Headed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva appears on the left. Above the Bodhisattvas are heavenly beings carved in bas-relief.
