Unjangam Hermitage: Seated Bodhisattva

SOUTH KOREA, South Chungcheong, Cheongyang; Goryeo dynasty

The statue was found on the roadside and was transferred to the Unjangam Hermitage in 1900. It is assumed to be an attendant from an Amitabha Buddha Triad, either Avalokitesvara or Mahasthamaprapta. It was listed as Treasure No. 986 in 1989.
The Bodhisattva wears a crown ornamented with medallions and flames. Ribbons fall from the crown down the sides of the head and curl around the ears. The figure sits in full lotus position with the hands raised in mudras. The monastic robe is painted white, which highlights such details as the long locks of hair scattered on the shoulders and the bead ornaments hanging over the legs that repeat the pattern on the necklace. The style is one that became popular at the end of the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392).
