The Buddha wears a monastic robe covering both shoulders, and the stylized folds flow in orderly lines about the body. The figure is seated in full lotus position with hands in the bodhyangi (wisdom first) mudra. The lotus throne is supported on a stone cube inset with a triple-leaf design. It rests on a stone slab that has ogee-arched insets. Judging from the size of the statue’s body, the square base, and the decorations on it, experts believe the statue dates from early Goryeo dynasty (918–1392). Holes on the back of the figure originally secured a mandorla. The carving was listed as Treasure No. 425 in 1965.
