Godori: Standing Buddha

Godori: Standing Buddhas

SOUTH KOREA, North Jeolla, Iksan; Goryeo dynasty

A provincial official commissioned the rebuilding of the fallen statues towards the end of the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910). They were rebuilt to face each other and have been well-maintained ever since. They were listed as Treasure No. 46 in 1963.
The statues are highly stylized. A large flat tile is located on top of the square hat. The bodies are primarily composed of a four-sided pillar with very little in detail apart from the outline of the robe, hands, and feet. Apart from the feet, the other details are in shallow relief. The clothing is similar to those worn by cemetery officials but the hats have been seen elsewhere, primarily worn by statue of Bodhisattvas. However, the statues have been created much later than the others as they dated to the late Goryeo dynasty (918–1392).
