Thayekhittaya: Reliquary Lid

MYANMAR, Bago, Hmawza

The slab was excavated from Thayekhittaya, one of the ancient capitals of Pyu. The piece is presumed to have been a reliquary lid since it accompanied a silver-gilt reliquary. A domed stupa is carved in low relief on the slab. Five niches at the base of the stupa have similar meditating Buddha figures that represent the three Buddhas of the past, a Buddha of the present, and Maitreya, the Buddha to come. Faint carvings of heavenly beings are visible on both sides of the stupa, holding parasols. The damaged structure at the top seems to support a double-tier canopy with banners attached on both sides.
