Munsusa Temple Ultimate Bliss Hall: Amitabha Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, South Chungcheong, Seosan; Goryeo dynasty

Located within the Ultimate Bliss Hall at Mususa Temple, the mustached Buddha sits in full lotus position with one hand raised and the other leveled in lotus mudra. The type of monastic robe the figure wears and the pattern of its folds resemble those of the Medicine Buddha at the neighboring Janggoksa Temple. Since both statues were made in the same year, it is assumed that they were cast by the same sculptor. The artist’s identity is known since the sculptor’s vow to make the statue was found in its interior in 1973. This also stated that it was completed in 1346 and listed the names of more than three hundred others involved. In addition, there were printed works, a costume, and other items found inside. The figure is listed as Tangible Cultural Property No. 34.
