Amitabha Buddha

JAPAN

The statue was brought to Taiwan in 1918 from Myoshinji Temple in Kyoto, Japan, and is enshrined in the Great Hero Hall of Daxian Temple. It depicts Amitabha Buddha standing on a spreading lotus with hands in the abhaya (fearlessness) and varada (wish-granting) mudras. The monastic robe covers both shoulders and is opened at the front to reveal an inner garment secured at the chest. The clothing is painted black, with decorative gold patterning in a style reflective of Japan’s Edo period (1615–1868).
