Sincheonri: Standing Buddhas

SOUTH KOREA, North Jeolla, Jeongeup; Baekje period

The two standing figures are worn but the presence of neck folds and the monastic robes that leave the right shoulder bare identify them as Buddhas. The lifted left arms turn the palm awkwardly outwards in varada (wish-granting) mudra. The fold of the robe over the wrist is individually depicted. It is clear from these elements, the different treatment of the robes, and other details that the figures were not originally companion pieces. It is only from 1982 that these statues have attracted the attention of researchers.
