Yongjusa Temple: Bell

Bronze

Yongjusa Temple: Bell

SOUTH KOREA, Gyeonggi, Hwaseong; Goryeo dynasty

The inscription on the bell states that it weighs 15 t. It is a rare large bell from the Goryeo dynasty and was listed as National Treasure No. 120 in 1964.
The crown is shaped like a dragon with a jewel in its mouth as it attempts to hold on tightly to the top of the bell with its jaws. Scroll leaf bands decorate the shoulder and the rim of the bell. On the upper part of the bell, there are four panels each with nine studs surrounded by a lotus and scroll leaf pattern. In the central section, there are reliefs of two apsaras and a seated Buddha Triad, with stoles flowing gracefully. A decorated canopy appears beneath the triad, and the raised boss is in the form of a lotus surrounded by a scrolling pattern.
