Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

Gilt bronze

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Liao dynasty

Avalokitesvara sits in half lotus position on a multi-petaled lotus throne. The ornate triangular crown, from which descends long ribbons decorated with knot ornaments, is fronted with the Bodhisattva’s tutelary Buddha. The figure’s right hand is lifted and may once have held an attribute. The clothes are exceptionally detailed, with a cloak covering the left shoulder and loosely wrapped around the waist. A large necklace hangs upon the chest. The complicated layering is a common feature of Liao dynasty Bodhisattva images. The lotus throne is supported on a round ornamented stand that gives it a Sumeru form.
