Chen Lu-Kuan

CHINA, Fujian, Fuzhou; Qing dynasty

Chen Lu-Kuan was a sculptor who moved from Fuzhou to Taipei, Taiwan. He specialized in temple sculpture and was skilled in creating statues of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and Dharma Protectors. His works are kept in several temples in Taipei including Yongming Temple, Yuantung, and Ciyun Temples in Zhonghe. Statues of the Three Buddhas and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva made by Chen’s father, son, and his disciples, are also kept in various temples around Taiwan.
All of Chen’s statues are either woodcuts or lacquerware, and their styles are proportionate and possess features such as long, square faces, small lips, and gentle facial expressions. The surface of each statue is applied with a chalk powder lining and then coated with lacquer. Chen’s Seated Avalokitesvara sits in full lotus position and wears a shawl. There are red and green ornaments adorning the chest, and his one hand holds a sutra, with the other forming a mudra in the front. The Heavenly King sculpted by Chen is featured with his eyes wide open with exaggerated movements that demonstrate his great strength. Another image of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, made from sandalwood, is exhibited in the Avalokitesvara Hall of Ciyun Temple.
