Statuette of Arhat

Bamboo

Statuette of Arhat

CHINA; Qing dynasty

This bamboo statuette of an Arhat was created by Feng Xilu during the Qing dynasty. The Arhat has a round, robust face, with slightly closed eyes. He stretches his arms out with interlocking fingers as he yawns, resulting in a wrinkled face. A flowing robe covers both shoulders, which are raised as he sits on a rock with his legs hanging down naturally. The Arhat’s upper torso is revealed and his ribs can clearly be seen. On the back of the statuette there is the inscription “by Feng Xilu” in running script.
The sculptor has produced a dynamic portrait of an Arhat, bringing out his character. Such surviving examples of Feng Xilu’s work are highly valued.
