Righteous Nature With a Chan Mind

Red-character square seal

Righteous Nature With a Chan Mind

CHINA; Qing dynasty

Although appearing borderless due to damage, this seal, comprised of four red characters features a well-balanced composition. This engraving is steady and executed in the peculiar albeit renowned Zhejiang school style. The method of carving was based on calligraphic techniques and created a clear, bright, and forceful work of seal art.
Zhao Zhichen was from Qiantang (present day Hangzhou, Zhejiang). He was a seal engraver, painter, and calligrapher of the Qing dynasty (1644–1911) who is regarded as one of the Eight Masters of Xiling, as well as a leading figure representing the later period of the Zhejiang school of seal engraving.
