White-character square seal
The Avatamsaka Sutra extols the ideology that “all is created in the mind;” suggesting that everything in the universe is conjured in the depths of our subconscious.
The five characters of this rotating-character seal appear in sinuous seal script and are arranged with two characters on the right, and three on the left, dividing the seal in half vertically. Using the Qin and Han styles as a base, the well-organized seal imparts a rigorous, neat, and smooth look. Small chopping cut was applied and blended with the strengths of the Zhejiang and Anhui school methods. The sparse and clear lines are steady and restrained, adopting the style of Wu Xizai’s seals. As a whole, the piece exudes a sense of simplicity and elegance.
Liang Naiyu was a seal engraver from Fuzhou, Fujian. He studied under Gao Baishi during his youth, and gradually formed his individualized style after years of diligent practice. Liang moved to Taiwan in 1949, where he enjoyed much success and created many seals, in addition to paintings and calligraphic pieces.
