Disciple of the White Robe Bodhisattva

Red-character square seal

Disciple of the White Robe Bodhisattva

CHINA; Qing dynasty

This red character seal breaks the tradition of employing the typically fine-lined small seal script characters that are often observed in similar works. Strokes in this piece are deliberately broadened, while the lines of the border frame are thinned out, resulting in a clean print that emphasizes the slightly sinuous, balanced, and well-spaced characters.
Shen Feng was also known as Fanming or Fanweng, and was a prominent seal engraver and painter. He briefly stayed at Cheng Conglong’s residence and diligently studied the works in his personal collection, in addition to works of the Qin (221–207 BCE) and Han (206 BCE–220 CE) dynasties. Seal works by Sheng are well-composed and balanced, with dynamic and lively characters. Shen self-rated himself as excelling in seal engraving first, painting second, and calligraphy third.
