Poem for Shodo Shiken

CHINA; Yuan dynasty

This poem was written by Dugu Chunpeng at the age of 73. In response to a request from Shodo Shiken for spiritual guidance, Dugu used the characters “Zheng” and “Tang” in Shodo’s assumed name to compose an encouraging poem that read, “If you follow the path appropriate for yourself, harmony will naturally be achieved.” The measured running script brushwork in this piece displays a calm and peaceful attitude akin to the essence of the poem itself.
Dugu Chunpeng was born to a Yang family in Linhai, Taizhou in Zhejiang. He was a monk and calligrapher of the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368), as well as a disciple of Chan Master Huyan Jingfu of Jingshan.
