Mind is the Buddha

White-character square seal

Mind is the Buddha

CHINA; Qing dynasty

The Avatamsaka Sutra expounds the notion that the “Mind is the Buddha,” which is a philosophy stating, “the mind, the Buddha, and all sentient beings are one and the same.” Therefore, there is no difference between the Buddha and the mind.
This seal conveys the above message in four characters, engraved in white-character style. Each one of the seal script characters are evenly distributed within the frame and are individually sized in accordance to the expanse of their given corner. Strokes comprising the characters that represent “ji” (is) and “fo” (Buddha) are coiled, and the knifing technique is smooth and steady. Uniformity is apparent in the round shape and thickness of each engraved character, portraying an upright elegance. The seal as a whole is generous in its form and exudes a sense of fullness.
