Red-character pictorial rectangular seal
This seal features the image of Sakyamuni Buddha with a high usnisa and a nimbus. Seated in full lotus position on a lotus pedestal, the left hand is arranged in the dhyana (meditation) mudra and the right hand in the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. The seal includes an inscription that describes the story behind it. The artist Feng Zikai vowed to take refuge in Buddhism on his 30th birthday. After becoming a disciple of Master Hongyi, an eminent monk in Nanshan Vinaya school, he decided to create this seal for him.
Feng Zikai had an original name of Run, which he later changed to Ren. After taking refuge in Buddhism, he was given the Dharma name of Yingxing. Feng was an artist, art educator, and teacher who was particularly skilled in poetry, painting, calligraphy, and seal engraving. Feng was famed for his Buddhist-themed series of graphic novels, which aided in the promotion of Buddhist virtues and had a profound impact on future generations.
