Red-character square seal
The Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra says, “Vigorous diligence requires leaving all laziness behind . . . destroy all troubles and withstand resentment.” In essence, the excerpt conveys the message that if one is vigorously diligent in their pursuits, then nothing will obstruct them on the right path.
This seal consists of two columns with two characters each. A broken line method is used to penetrate through the monotony of the layout and avoid mediocrity, while the use of the knife as a brush depicts a forceful calligraphic technique. The seal as a whole is naturally brushed, with an expression that highlights its strength and exhibits its individuality.
Chen Shizeng was adept in poetry and literature, as well as calligraphy, painting, and seal engraving. He studied in Japan, and after his return to China, he was involved in art education, in addition to making profound achievements in the history of Chinese painting and literati painting theories.
