Master Hongyi was originally named Li Shutong. He was well-known for his proficiency in various forms of art, and was renowned as an innovator in traditional Chinese painting, poster painting, drama, and music. After his renunciation, he concentrated solely on creating Buddhist calligraphy, giving his pieces as gifts to those who had an affinity with him.
