Trichiliocosm

Red-character square seal

Trichiliocosm

CHINA

This seal illustrating the trichiliocosm in Buddhist cosmology, was carved in Sanskrit script. Trichiliocosm literally means “Three Thousand Great Thousand.” The characters are read across two rows from left to right, top to bottom; “Three Thousand” appears in the upper row, while “Great Thousand” is on the bottom. Several cutting techniques were employed in this piece, resulting in a sturdily carved seal that looks decorative with an essence of foreign culture.
Originally named Chuanyan, with an alias of Bajian, Tai Jingnong was from Huoqiu, Anhui. He was skilled in the arts of calligraphy and seal engraving, in addition to being known as a keen photographer.
