White-character oval seal
This line from the Heart Sutra describes the knowledge of Bodhisattvas, who are said to realize that all phenomena is illusion. Therefore, they can easily depart from delusion and more clearly understand the reality of the world.
The six characters of this oval seal are spread out evenly, comprising two columns with three words each in sinuous seal script. Carved with a refined finish, the characters are full and beautiful, exuding a sense of grace and elegance.
Zhang Yuecheng, originally named Fuyin, was a native of Xinhe, Hebei. He was deprived of an education as a child due to poverty, he later moved to Yanjing and learned the art of seal engraving. He then established the Tonggu Tang in Beijing where he carved seals for a living. Zhang further sought the advice of virtuous masters, rigorously studying the Six Categories of Chinese Characters. He was also known to have carved several imperial seals for Emperor Xuantong (reigned 1908–1912) of the Qing dynasty. His artistry was refined and beautiful, gaining a widespread reputation.
