Vajra Bell (detail)

Vajra Bell

KOREA; Goryeo dynasty

Vajras signify the purity of innate nature and the elimination of all defilement. The vajra bell is one of the four Dharma instruments of Vajrayana Buddhism, along with the vajra, beads, and drum.
This vajra bell is thought to have been excavated from a site in North Gyeongsang province. Consisting of a handle and bell, the handle takes the form of three-prong vajra. Between the handle and the bell, there is a ring of inverted lotus petals. The bell has six sides curved at the rim, each featuring a relief of a wrathful warrior.
