Myoshinji Temple: Bell

Bronze

Myoshinji Temple: Bell

JAPAN, Kyoto; Hakuho period

Cast in 698, this bell is regarded as the oldest dated bell in Japan. It measures 150.6 cm high, 86 cm in diameter, and weighs 1 t. From the inscription, it is known that it was cast at Kasuya by Tsukishine no Murajihirokuni. Originally located at Jokongoin Temple in Saga, it was moved to Myoshinji Temple in Kyoto during the Hakuho period (645–710). It was listed as a National Treasure in 1951.
The head of the bell is rather small and is decorated with rows of studs; the sides curve gently to the wide rim. A band of scroll leaf patterns decorate the shoulder, with studs just below. An embossed design located near the middle is surrounded by 12 lotus petals. More scroll leaf patterns are visible above the rim.
The bell is similar to that of the Kanzeonji Temple Bell in terms of size, style, and design of the raised boss. The main difference is in the decoration of the bands on the shoulder and edge of the bell. It is suggested that both were cast at the same foundry near the end of the 7th century.
