Yungang Grotto 18: Sakyamuni Buddha

CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Northern Wei dynasty

Situated on the back (north) wall, this large sculpture depicting Sakyamuni Buddha stands at a height of 15.5 m. Although the lower part of the figure has suffered weathering and erosion, the upper section is relatively well preserved. The statue has a round usnisa, a full face, and long, narrow eyes. The Buddha wears a monastic robe draped over the left shoulder. The robe is exquisitely decorated with beaded patterns and the Thousand Buddhas. One hand is raised at the chest, while the other hangs down by the side.
