Shin Yakushiji Temple Main Hall: Medicine Buddha

The statue was created circa the late 8th century. During renovation in 1975, eight fascicles of the Lotus Sutra were discovered inside the Buddha. It is estimated, based on the character of the writing, that the statue dates from the early Heian period (794–1185). The main body was carved from a block of nutmeg wood. The leg section was carved from a round log measuring 100 cm in diameter and 30 cm deep, divided into ten equal parts then bonded together, a very uncommon technique. This figure was listed as a National Treasure in 1951.
The Buddha is mustached and sits in full lotus position with the right hand in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra and the left hand cupped to hold the now missing medicine pot. The monastic robe is depicted with realistic folds and cloth that falls over the front of the throne. Apart from the usnisa, eyebrows, eyes and mouth, the rest of the surface is in its original color. The mandorla is engraved with patterns of flowers and leaves on which are superimposed six replicas of the main figure. The mandorla also surrounds and partly obscures the circular intersecting aureole and radiating nimbus.
