Yungang Grotto 17: Seated Buddha

CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Northern Wei dynasty

Located on the right side of the east wall is a trapezoidal niche containing this large Buddha sculpture, which sits beneath a lintel decorated with flying apsaras. The Buddha has a high usnisa, rounded face, and gentle smile on the lips. The Buddha sits in half lotus position with the hands forming the dhyana (meditation) mudra in front of the abdomen. A monastic robe is worn over both shoulders, with details outlining the draped folds of the garment across the chest. The nimbus behind the Buddha is ornamented with lotus petals, apsaras, and flame patterns.
