Chongsheng Temple Qianxun Pagoda: Vairocana Buddha Triad

CHINA, Yunnan, Dali; Dali Kingdom

This Vairocana Buddha triad was recovered from Qianxun Pagoda at Chongsheng Temple in 1978. Vairocana Buddha, cast in gold and measuring 3.9 cm high, is framed by a wooden arch in the shape of a lotus bud. The arch stands on a circular Sumeru throne. The Buddha’s left hand forms the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra while he sits on a lotus throne carved from wood. The two attendants are made of gilt silver, with Akasagarbha Bodhisattva on the left and Mahakala on the right. Akasagarbha is 4.3 cm high and appears ferocious with three heads and six arms. He sits on a lotus throne with two prominent arms raised to support the sun and moon. Mahakala is 4.8 cm high and has fiery hair and fangs. He has a string of skulls across the chest and is seated with legs crossed on a wooden lotus throne.
