Mirror with Cundi Dharani

CHINA; Yuan dynasty

This bronze mirror features the Cundi Dharani in both Chinese and Sanskrit. Cundi is a form of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. It is believed that chanting the Cundi Dharani helps one to cure illnesses, avert disasters, accumulate merit, and ultimately attain enlightenment.
This round mirror has a square at the center, featuring the Chinese character for Buddha. The square is surrounded by the Cundi Dharani in Chinese, with the 26 Sanskrit syllables of the mantra around the rim.
