Plaque with Buddha and Two Disciples

Gilt silver

Plaque with Buddha and Two Disciples

MYANMAR; Bagan Empire

This plaque was made during the Kingdom of Bagan (circa 849–1287).
The Buddha has curly hair with a pronounced usnisa. The inner nimbus is in the shape of a lotus petal, with a flame pattern at the sides, while the outer nimbus has tree branches with faded color and detail. The Buddha’s eyes and eyebrows are narrow, and he is smiling. With a short neck and broad shoulders, the physique appears strong. Seated in full lotus position on a lotus throne, the Buddha performs the Dharmacakra (Dharma wheel) mudra. A disciple is kneeling on each side looking towards the Buddha with palms joined in reverence.
