Java: Vajrasattva

Volcanic stone

Java: Vajrasattva

INDONESIA, East Java

The statue was unearthed from East Java and depicts Vajrasattva seated in half lotus position. Both hands of the figure hold votive objects that are either damaged or missing, but are believed to be the bell and vajra. The figure’s hair has been arranged into an elaborate topknot that is secured with a crown and has locks of hair falling down the shoulders. Thick ornate jewelry decorates the chest and arms, and a fancy sacred thread falls down past the knees. The lower garment is almost invisible save for the presence of the belt and straps. The figure is seated on a cushion located above a flattened, double lotus throne. A plain nimbus and mandorla frame the work.
