Wat Phra Chetuphon Reclining Buddha Hall: Reclining Buddha

THAILAND, Bangkok; Bangkok period

Commissioned by King Rama III (reigned 1824–1851) in 1830, this immense statue was the first reclining Buddha created during the Bangkok period (1782–present). It is 46 m in length and 15 m high, the feet alone measuring 3 m by 5 m. After the statue’s creation, the hall was built around it.
The Buddha reclines on his right side, with the right hand supporting the head and the left arm resting along the body. The legs are positioned straight, with one foot placed on top of the other. The whole statue is gilded and one of the unique features is the swirls on the toes, which are of equal length, as well as the 108 auspicious images inlaid with mother-of-pearl that cover the rest of the feet.
