Chongsheng Temple Qianxun Pagoda: Garuda

CHINA, Yunnan, Dali; Dali Kingdom

This garuda was recovered from Qianxun Pagoda at Chongsheng Temple in 1978. Standing on a lotus flower with its wings spread, the garuda has a beak that curves downward and a long neck. The feathers on its head have a flame effect, and its tail also appears in flame pattern. The feathers on the tail have five inlaid crystals, while the gems on the abdomen and shoulders are missing.
A number of different metalworking techniques were used to produce this garuda. They are a special feature of pagodas in Yunnan, and this particular piece is a fine example of metalwork from the Dali Kingdom (937–1253).
