Dazu Rock Carvings Beishan Cave 136: Avalokitesvara Holding Prayer Beads

CHINA, Chongqing, Dazu; Southern Song dynasty

Situated in the north wall of the cave, Avalokitesvara stands barefoot on a lotus pedestal, holding a string of prayer beads in one hand. The Bodhisattva wears a tall headdress fronted by a Buddha, a long gown, and some ornaments. Two smoke-like light rays rise out of the urna towards the ceiling. A nimbus surrounds the head. Bright paint is still visible on the nimbus and some parts of the gown.
The inscription above the statue dates to 1146 and indicates the donor as Wang Sheng, a devotee, and his wife He. The image was dedicated to the long life and good reputation of Wang’s father, Wang Shan, and mother Zhou.
