
Born in Fu’an, Ningde, Boyuan was a monk and artist skilled in calligraphy and painting. At age 11, he received private schooling and training in calligraphy, painting, and literary classics. He became a novice monk at the age of 19 under Master Jingsheng of Guanghua Temple in Fujian. He was fully ordained under monk Xuyun at Yongchuan Temple in Fujian at the age of 22.
He relocated to Kek Lok Si Temple in Penang, Malaysia in 1947 to assume the role of a supervisor. He was later nominated as the Vice Chairman of the Malaysian Buddhist Federation, as well as the Advisor of the Malaysian Youth Buddhist Association. Actively involved in the Malaysian community, he raised funds for welfare, and conducted his first solo exhibition to auction his works, becoming the first person to hold a solo exhibition in the National Art Gallery in Kuala Lumpure, Malaysia in 2000.
Boyuan was well-known for his generosity, compassion, and artistic talent, and received several honors for his contributions. In spite of his achievements, he spent his final years in simplicity, immersing himself in painting, calligraphy, and poetry at the Hu Bing Vihara in Kuala Lumpur. His works include Wounds of A Sleeping Lion, Reminiscing the Past Amid Sweeping Sound of Pines, Clear Conscience is Peacefulness – Master Boyuan Art of Chan, and A Fate Linked by Ink – A Joint Effort of Master Boyuan and Student, Liu Qinglun. In addition, his calligraphy was selected to be carved on steles in the Stele Forest of Calligraphy in 1991, and the Stele Forest of Poems in 1992; both are located in Henan, China.
