Bew Eng means Wondrous Response. It refers to the wondrous sense and ability of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva to hear the cries of sentient beings and to relieve their suffering. Chan Master Miaoying, a native of Fujian from the late Tang dynasty (618–907), is also commemorated in the name, which has the same meaning in Mandarin Chinese. His image is enshrined in the temple. In 1952, a monk from Fujian named Jihuang came to Seremban to propagate the Dharma and to practice medicine. In 1968 he founded the temple, which was inaugurated in 1970.
The temple occupies an area of 1.2 ha and consists of the main hall and an activity center. The main hall has an overhanging gable roof with upward curving eave ends. Within the hall, there is a statue of the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, flanked by Sudhana and Nagakanya. The activity center has three stories and contains a Buddha Hall, dormitory, and other facilities.
