Bodhisattva in Contemplation

Bodhisattva in Contemplation

KOREA

The statue is also known as the “crowned Maitreya” due to the presence of the headdress. A “golden Maitreya” was mentioned in the records at Koryuji temple that date to 873, so scholars believe this statue is of Maitreya. One account of the statue’s origin reports that it was presented by the Korean Kingdom of Baekje to Prince Shotoku in 603, while another account claims it was brought from the Kingdom of Silla in 623. It remained the main focus of worship after enshrinement within Koryuji Temple. The sculpture carved from red pine was originally lacquered and gilded. It was listed as a National Treasure in 1951.
The slender, graceful figure is simply clothed in a long pleated skirt with stylized folds similar to the Toriha style from the Asuka period (538–645). The head, body, and throne were partially hollowed to reduce the weight. The Bodhisattva sits in a contemplative but relaxation posture with his right hand raised and the fingers almost touching the cheek in a pose that became standard for this figure in Japan.
