Mogao Cave 57: Standing Bodhisattvas
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty
These two Bodhisattvas are painted on the back (west) wall of the main chamber to the right of the niche. They have round faces with long, arched eyebrows, and wear elaborate ornaments over colorful robes. Their heads are topped by ornate headdresses and surrounded by decorative nimbuses. Both Bodhisattvas have slender physiques and lean slightly to one side. In contrast to the simple Bodhisattva images made during the Sui dynasty (581–618), these figures are painted in intricate detail. This is representative of Bodhisattva images from the Early Tang period (618–712).
