Kyaikpun Pagoda: Seated Buddhas

MYANMAR, Bago

Created during the 15th century, the four Buddhas represent the three Buddhas of the present bhadra kalpa: Krakucchanda, Kanakamuni, Kasyapa, and Sakyamuni. They sit back to back against a square brick pillar and face the four cardinal directions. Each Buddha is in the lotus position and sit upon Sumeru thrones. They were destroyed by an earthquake but have since been restored.
Signs of Buddhahood include a high usnisa, an urna located between the eyebrows and the three lines on the neck. The right hands, with fingers equal in length and embellished with mosaics, are in bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. The monastic robes they wear leave the right shoulder bare with folds rippling down the left side of the body. The figures are unadorned except for the colorful mosaics that edge the hems of the monastic robes. Apart from the face and the mosaics, there is not much difference between each Buddha.
A gold stupa can be found at each corner of the structure, while a smaller one is located at the very top of the central pillar.
